Unlike developing a single course, curriculum design requires looking at the entire learning experience, where every competency, lesson, assessment, and activity must work together to help learners build knowledge and skills over time. This project called for a competency-based curriculum aligned to professional standards, with a clear, logical progression for learners. The challenge was not simply deciding what to teach, but determining how to organize, connect, and sequence learning so each component supported the next.
The curriculum framework was built from the ground up in partnership with subject matter experts, assessment developers, and instructional designers. Responsibilities included developing competencies and evidence statements, organizing curriculum scope and sequence, aligning learning objectives with competencies and assessments, facilitating discussions to build shared understanding across the team, translating complex subject matter into measurable learning outcomes, ensuring alignment with accreditation and professional standards, and creating documentation to support the development team.
The work followed a series of connected decisions rather than isolated tasks. The destination came first: defining what learners should know and be able to do by the end of the curriculum, before deciding what they should study along the way. From there, concepts were organized into a logical learning progression, with foundational knowledge supporting more complex ideas so learners could build confidence as they advanced. Every layer, competencies, evidence statements, learning objectives, lessons, activities, and assessments, was aligned to the same learning goals. Ambiguity was reduced throughout by asking questions, clarifying terminology, and documenting decisions so everyone shared the same understanding before development began. Documentation was also built with the next person in mind, supporting the subject matter experts, instructional designers, assessment developers, and instructional technologists who would rely on the work during development.
Key design decisions included sequencing learning from foundational concepts to application, breaking broad competencies into measurable evidence statements, ensuring every learning objective supported an assessment or competency, organizing content to reduce cognitive load, creating clear documentation and templates to support collaboration across teams, and building a framework that could evolve as the curriculum matured.
The project reinforced that curriculum design is more than organizing content. Strong curricula create alignment across the entire learning system, where every decision influences the next stage of development, from assessment design to instructional materials and implementation. Clear expectations, terminology, and documentation allowed teams to collaborate more effectively, made development more efficient, and gave learners a more cohesive learning experience.Â
